"Virtual Wall" to protect pedestrians

Pedestrians tend to cross streets not realizing that they are mainly for high speed cars to travel on, so a designer developed a system to cut down on people getting hit by cars at lights.

"Virtual Wall" to stop traffic! - 03 / 05 / 2008 07:58

It's common knowledge that crosswalks, although very handy, can also be very dangerous. It only takes one driver who isn't paying attention and you have a situation that could end very badly.

Thankfully, a new concept design from the mind Hanyoung Lee should help to reduce the number of such instances drastically.

Currently the design is only a concept, mostly due to difficulty and expense of production.

The barries will not just suddenly illuminate bright red in the middle of downtown wherever.

For safety purposes there would almost have to be something similar to the yellow flashing lights on a school-bus prior to full red illumination.

The idea behind the new crosswalk is simple. Instead of only using lights on each corner of the sidewalk, project an image spanning from one side of the road to the other.

The bright red beam of lights should be visible for at least a few blocks and when illuminated, should stop even the most careless drivers.

Hanyoung Lee's brilliant Virtual Wall concept could certainly assist the non-hardened tourists cross from one side to another without fear of being flattened.

The wall would consist of laser beams showing pedestrians walking or some message to stop cars.

Essentially, the light-formed barrier would keep cars and Earthlings separated while individuals are cleared to walk, and while we aren't sure if cars that bumped into the laser field would catch fire, explode, stall or set off a ridiculous alarm, we do know that it won't stop stupidity of pedestrians.
