The seminar was held by U.S. Congress Turkey Study Group. U.S. Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen, speaking at the seminar, said that relations between Turkey and the United States were very important. Cohen said that the United States did not have a better friend than Turkey both in NATO and the Middle East. Turkish ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party Deputy Chairman Egemen Bagis also said that in the past passive stance of the United States regarding Turkey's fight against terrorism was a problem for bilateral relations, but after U.S. President George W. Bush declared PKK terrorist organization as common enemy of Turkey, U.S. and Iraq on November 5th, 2007, relations changed positively. He said that since that date cooperation and solidarity between Turkey and the U.S. had reached the highest level, and Turkey stroke heavy blow on PKK. Bagis said that Turkey had become a peace platform to solve all problems in the region. Seminar will continue on Friday. |
