A train carrying 260 passengers was quarantined Friday in eastern Canada's Ontario province after one passenger died and several others fell sick, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said.

The train, which belongs to government-funded railway company Via Rail Canada, was quarantined at the train depot in Foleyet, a community near Sudbury in southern Ontario.

It was traveling from Jasper in Alberta to Toronto, Canadian Television reported. Up to ten people are currently ill with flu-like symptoms.

One person has died. A few others are seriously ill.

Emergency workers are transporting the patients to nearby hospitals by air or land ambulance, OPP Sgt. Laura Nichols said.

It is not clear what caused the disease, Nichols said, adding the illnesses appeared to have been contained to two train cars.
