DTP missed the peace boat in Turkey

Turkey's pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) complains that their party's not being taken as the "notified party" for the Kurdish issue.

- 18 / 05 / 2008 12:38

After Turkey's general election in 2007, I commented positively on the DTP's entry into the Turkish Parliament with a sufficient number of deputies to form their own parliamentary group.

But let me confess that I was later disappointed.

The political attitudes that DPT's deputies and executives revealed in parliament led me to consider that this party was simply a hostage of the PKK.

Of course, I am not alone in my disappointment.

For all those hoping to bring an end to the killing and to silence the guns and to end the PKK conflict in Turkey and for everyone that does not support the PKK, they too were disappointed with the DTP's political path.

DPT’s deputies have misunderstood the issue; thinking that it was Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the separatist PKK, and not the general public that got them elected to parliament. And instead of exerting efforts to solve the problems of their supporters, they endeavored to legitimize the jailed Ocalan.

As a result of these efforts, they are no longer taken seriously.

Those having missed this extremely important opportunity do not have the right to complain about having missed the boat on this issue.
