Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan who is a member of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party is trying to address those who are bent on closing down the party and banning its leaders Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister.

He means well when he says the Constitutional Court which is now hearing the closure case against the AK Party should find a solution to a potentially major crisis.

He says the court should reprimand the AK Party with a warning and say its actions will be closely monitored by the chief prosecutor. Thus it will not take a decision that will embarrass the chief prosecutor who has launched the closure case while it will not create a political disaster by shutting down the ruling party.

This solution sounds good and should be accepted by people with a bit of common sense.

However, those who are trying to closedown the ruling party seemed to have lost their reasoning. They want AK Party to be pushed into the history books and aim to have Erdogan banned for at least five years.

The idea is not just to end the existence of the AK party but make sure that Erdogan cannot prevail even as an independent politician.

These people have been blinded with vendetta and have no desire for compromise. They feel their system has been threatened and want to erase the obstacles.

We fear that even the presidency of Abdullah Gul is in jeopardy.

Turkey has been the scene of several military coups. Each coup has put Turkey back at least for ten years. But those who launched the coups did not care. So why should they care now?

Koksal means well but he has to realize that we are living in a real world.
