A Turkish parliamentary committee for inquiry into workplace safety at shipyards in Istanbul's Tuzla district submitted a report to the parliament on Thursday.

61 workers have died due to various accidents at Tuzla shipyards since 2000.

The committee, which that investigated 61 work-related deadly accidents at these shipyards over the past 8 years, proposed a series of precautions to be taken.

The report said works at Tuzla shipyards should not be subcontracted to any other companies and that all companies running business at these shipyards should employ on-site doctors.

Unionization should be encouraged to secure health and safety at work. It also said that control mechanism to avoid uninsured employment at shipyards should be more effective, it added.

Inspectors of Labor and Security Ministry decided last week to suspend activities at three shipyards in Tuzla till dangers threatening lives of workers were removed.
