An open letter to the PKK

Let me clearly pose the following questions asked by every average person in Turkey: What is your purpose in escalating this terror?

- 11 / 10 / 2008 09:04

Mehmet Kamis

Why do you kill the children of this country? Under what ideological basis do you sent 19 or 20-year-old boys and girls to their deaths?

What is your real purpose? A separate Kurdish state? Do you really believe that you can establish a Kurdish state this way? The progress you have made in 30 years is obvious.

Kurds and Turks have over time intermingled so intricately that you can do nothing about it. You cannot divide them. You have not found support for independence, and you know very well that you will not find it. You are aware of the fact that the Kurds living in İstanbul, İzmir and Bursa will not leave these cities to return to the Southeast. You have failed to separate uncles from cousins.

This country is trying to be a democratic state where individual freedoms are upheld and human rights are not violated. This country is trying to get rid of a crime network called Ergenekon that has penetrated into positions within the state. It is trying to empty its bowels of this dirt and put an end to murders by unknown assailants which have gone on for 40 years. Why do you insistently block the country’s democratic progress? Why do you pave the way for a more autocratic administration of the country under the pretext of security measures?

This country is trying to develop and improve its welfare. It is trying to prevent economic wealth from being laid waste by the powers that be. Do you believe that as young people die, Kurds will be more prosperous or that as bloodshed continues, Kurds will be happier and more tranquil?

Why do you escalate tension at every critical moment? This country has learned not to close down elected political parties. Individual freedoms are being extended to the entire country. Why do you obstruct the purging of illegal networks within the state? Why do you kill our young and precious boys as if to lend support to continued presence of these illegal networks?

Do you think Turkey has not understood what you tried to achieve in the July 22, 2007 elections? You conducted large-scale terrorist attacks, and when certain powers within the country suggested that the election be postponed so a military operation could be carried out in northern Iraq to eradicate terrorism, you escalated your terrorist attacks. Who asked you to play your part in this game? Why did you have the same target as the Ergenekon network? Won’t you explain? Is it the same old left hand and right hand issue?

Or is it because you want the status quo to be maintained? Nothing has changed since the children who died in Aktütün and Dağlıca were born. Why don’t you allow the status quo to change? Are you aware of who benefits from the status quo? Or are you the soldiers of the same body? Do you really know why you exhaust Turkey’s resources and for whom? Your clan chiefs and our clan chiefs stay the same while hundreds of young children die. Who rules you? Abdullah Öcalan? But, as we know, Öcalan is in prison in İmralı. What sort of imprisonment is this?

Do your terrorist acts really serve your purposes? Do you really think about it? Or are you just a terrorist company that has no ideological concerns?
